This is a big messy category for dancers
that I've met and admired over the years for whom I have links
(and maybe a photo!) . . . so rummage around to see who
has shown up. Like everything else on this website, it
will be a work in progress! A perfectionist's work
is never done. And keep scrolling down . . . there's a
lot on here.
Meleea - The Lady of the Feather Fans! My good
friend of many years and something of a mentor to
me. She has developed her specialty with fans in the
last few years. She has a website where she sells
costumes and videos of all her specialties/props:
fans, candles, tray, double veils,
sword.
Some of my FAVORITE dancers from whom I've taken
workshops over the
years:
Amaya
(many workshops, my first big
influence): http://home.comcast.net/~mamaya1/index.html
Angelika
Nemeth (many
workshops): http://www.angelikanemeth.com/index2.html .
Cassandra (several workshops plus Oasis Dance Camp
1998 and 2002): http://www.jawaahir.org/cassandra.htm
Dahlena
- I attended her weeklong in
Chicago, 2001 with the latest workshop, San Diego,
January 2002: www.dahlena.com .
Jalilah - The producer of some of my favorite
music. A wonderful Egyptian style dancer who wants
to help us to learn to appreciate the beauty of Middle Eastern
music through her hard work at producing the Piranha series of
CDs. http://www.gildedserpent.com/aboutuspages/jalilahzamora.htm AND
http://www.piranha.de/jalilah/
Jasmin
Jahal -
Chicago, Chicago! - she has a new studio that I checked out on
my last trip up. An excellent teacher,
whom I've taken a few workshops from over the past few
years.
Morocco: a tireless crusader in getting
across accurate information about this dance that we so love,
teaching us good solid choreographies, making us laugh while
she works us hard in her dance classes (have I really only
done two of her weeklongs? and that was in the winter in
NYC!), and a great tour leader . . yes, this is the tour that
I took to Turkey!
Shareen el
Safy - Los Angeles,
California: transmitting her
ideas on posture and the Egyptian styling has taken me so much
further along in my dance and without so much lower back
pain.
Khadeja and Mustapha, living in Wiesbaden,
Germany:
During a fun weekend in Gainesville, FLA, I took
workshops from both of these fun dancers. They are
coming back to Dallas in July 2009 and I hope I can take a few
more classes with them.
Jihan
Jamal -
Miami, FL. She is wonderful and
I don't get to Miami for long enough to take classes with her
but I had a couple of workshops with her that I really
enjoyed. She has more feeling than many dancers and she is
definitely Egytian style.
Keti
Sharif - from
Australia but living in Egypt (Cairo/El Gouna) part of
the time (most of the time??). She has been tirelessly
working to promote Egyptian style while branching off into her
A-Z Method, AstroBelly and a few other fun physical activities
designed to get us moving. She has a new festival
coming up in December 2009 - Sphinx
Festival . Other pursuits include offering
small group classes in Cairo with Farida Fahmy and Mahmoud
Reda. I attended the Farida Fahmy classes in Feb.
2009.
Farida
Fahmy - one of the
founding members of the The Reda Troupe, Farida has been
involved with dance for over 50 years. She is a gracious
lady and I thoroughly enjoyed the time that I spent chatting
with her during the interview I conducted and while attending
her classes. My article regarding this interview and the
classes will be published on Gilded Serpent . . . once I
finish writing it.
Lulu
Sabongi, Brasil - In March 2009, I took 2
workshop classes with her (traveling steps and
shimmies). She is fun and a very good teacher not to
mention a dynamite performer. I hope that I have
the opportunity to study with her again soon.
Unfortunately, her site was down when I tried to "link" to it
. . . so I used the link to an interview on orientaldancer.net
, which is another forum for those interested in Oriental
dance/Raks Sharki.
